How to repaint a road bike frame?

Tips for stripping/sanding it and then painting. Where to get old decals for vintage bikes. Is it really hard to repaint a bike?

No, it's not really hard to do, but you'll have to take your time and get the frame prepped.

Easiest solution would be to have a motorcycle painter or someone with the capabilities have is bead-blasted. Then paint or powdercoat. Powdercoat is a much more durable finish but it is thicker so if you want to show off details like lugs you'll want to stick with getting it painted.

Don't know about decals, but you can try the Bicycle Restoration Yahoo Group; lots of very knowledgeable people there,

If you are confident in your abilities, go ahead and paint it yourself. Lots have done the old spray can routine but airbrushing yeilds much better results. Pay attention to any vent/weepholes that you don't occlude them (unless you really want to).
Count on primer + at least 2 coats + 2 clear coats, and of course more depending on how high of quality and how much time you ware willing to invest.
just spray paint it .
Hire a pro. If you want it to look good and you're restoring a vintage bike spend a little money for a professional to do it. It's really not hard to do yourself, but it will last longer and look better if a pro does it. Decales for many vintage bikes can be found on Ebay. They tend to be rare so you'll have to check back often.
Lots of sanding, but 000 steel wool can make a fast job of it. Smooth out any scratches.

Paint with Epoxy paint. This is only available in White, Black, and Cream, but it will not come off. Other consumer spray paints will just about fall right off.

Paint the bike "upside down" first. Wait at least a day. Sand again with 000 steel wool. Now paint it right side up. This will put all overspray out of sight. With consumer spray paints, it is best to make a light "fog" coat first that does not shine and then proceed to paint a few minutes afterwards. This avoids bubbles.

Several cleanings with ordinary glass cleaner are necessary after sanding the bike. But, if you did not already know this, then it would be best to have the bike painted.

Of course, you should remove as many things as possible from the bike before you paint. Don't leave the chain on.

You can photograph the old decals or find some photos. Print these onto "bumper sticker" paper and then apply clear coat over the top of the new decals. You can also buy most common decals on-line or have some made up.

Is it really hard to repaint a bike? Yes. But, it is doable if you have had some previous good experience with painting metal objects and if you use a very strong paint that won't waste your efforts later.
