How can you tell road bike brake pads are worn out? |
When I bought my first set of replacement pads the guy at the bike shop said I had used my pads for far too long. He said there was a obvious visual clue that pads should be replaced. Unfortunately, I can't remember what the clue was. This second set are getting worn down and braking response has become mushy. I either need to tighten to compensate for reduced pad width or replace the pads but I can't tell which. In the event things need replacing, I can just by the rubber pads and keep the brake shoes, right? My shoe/pad assembly looks like this: http://www.nashbar.com/nashbar_photos/me... If you are no longer able to adjust the brakes because they have worn down too far, or it looks like the metal part of the brake is getting close to touching the tire, then it is time to replace the brake pads. If you have the option of replacing just the rubber pad on the brake do it! It's not only cheaper, but it helps the environment too. Of course if the metal seems twisted or bent you should replace the entire brake part. See those grooves cut in the pads? When those are no longer there, your pads are very worn. Those grooves are there to help dissipate heat when the brakes are applied. If they're gone, first off you will probably be at the end of the adjustment range, second you could over heat your brakes/rims, and third you could find yourself without stopping power at a moment when you really may need it . Not wise to second guess your brake pads or the feel of your brakes. Safe thing to do would be to replace them, especially if you are in doubt. the grove in the pad is a clue. also if your rim stars to get rough and there are granules in or on the pads, it's time to get them replaced Mushyness of brake can be adjusted by retensioning the cable and adjusting the brake |
