I just bought a road bike. It's old and the brakes are difficult to squeeze.?

I don't want to spend alot having someone fix this or replace it (bike cost $15). What are a few things I should check out (take apart/replace/grease...) before going to a pro shop?

Don't use WD40, that will loosen up stuck nuts and screws, and help with rusty parts, but dirt will stick to it and make the problem worse. Get a lube made specifcally for bikes. You can get a bottle at any bike store for just a few bucks, and you just have to dribble some down the cable housing to make your brakes work better. If the cable are frayed, rusty, or split, they need to be replaced.
The cables are probably rusty. If it were me, I would take it to a bike shop for a tune-up. It might cost $50 or so, maybe a bit more if you need new cables, but they'll check everything out and adjust the brakes and shifting, true the wheels, etc. They'll let you know if anything else needs repair or replacing, too.
sorry man but you can't expect much from a bike that cost 15 bucks.

if you take it to a pro shop, they would probably recommend you to buy a new bike just like i am now. you'll be spending more on repairing the bike than buying a new one that's a bit decent.
Difficult to squeeze or difficult to stop the bike? If it's just difficult to squeeze, blast everything (levers, cables, calipers) with WD40. Replacing the cables and housings is ideal, but not always necessary for brakes. If you're actually having trouble stopping the bike you can try new pads, but if you're used to modern dual pivot calipers the old brakes are never going to feel good enough.
