Looking to buy a new or used Road bike...? |
I have been riding a Fuji Valite thats about 12 years old, bike feels like its tearing me up - due to the fact that it doesn't fit me and is so old and out of any kind of good shape. I want something new, I ride about 3 - 4 times a week, about 20 miles each time, looking to also up that to 50 - 60 miles on a new bike. I have a limited amt. of money, I'd say about $500 is my limit, any suggestions? I am 6'4" so all the used bikes on craigslist are always 52cm - 56cm bikes, too small for me... With $500, you should buy used...a new bike will run you $800 - $1000 minimum for the type of riding you are going to do. Check used bike shops. You probably want to go with STI levers because if you are used to shifters on the down-tube, STI levers will change your life. You should look for a minimum component level of Shimano 105 (or comparable Campy/SRAM stuff). As for the type (carbon, aluminum, steel) ride what you can find and pick from there...brands don't matter too much at your price point. Also, if you can buy a last years' model, you can save quite a bit of money on a new bike...for about $1000, you should have several fairly nice models to choose from. Good luck!! go to a local bike shop and ask them for road bikes that are under $500. try all of them, we can give you the suggestions, but it totally depends on rather you like the bike or not, buy the one that you like the most. Best of luck I stumbled on this company that sells bikes really cheap http://rscycle.com and over the past few weeks have recommended them on Y!A several times. They have some 2005 and 2006 bikes by Tommaso (an old Italian name) for some great prices. In full disclosure, I know the guy that specs Tommaso bikes but that wouldn't change my answer. You might also want to check out KHS, Diamondback, and Raleigh. They generally have bikes that are specced with 1 level better components than the typical Trek or Specialized for the same money... but the Tommaso deals are tough to beat. 27 years in the industry As I don't have any advice for you, I saw on someone else's question that you talked about bike paths in Michigan. I'm in Michigan and would like to know some decent places to ride. Email me with a few locations if you can. Thanks. |
