Converting a buell to a road bike? |
i have a 1997 buel cyclone that i want to take the engine out of and put into a "chopper frame( rigid or softail). i love the power and torque of the engine, but the cafe style bike crushes my junk. can i swap out 1200 sportster lower cases with the ones on the buell motor so that i can bolt it (buell motor) to a different frame? if not, will the buell lower fit into any other style of lower that is compatible with a regular frame? any help would be much appreciated. no case swap neccesary all buell motors except possibly blast are identical in fit with sportster engines, any after market frame made for sportsters buell engine will bolt up to. go to mcworx.com they have a frame kit that is made with buell conversions in mind, with the kits they offer you can use the engine, front end and wheels from your buell and it would be a safe bet that you would be the first kid on the block with that kind of ride. hope that helps. You should be able to order a frame from almost any reputable frame manufacturer, specifying mounts for your Buell engine (which is, basically, a Sportster engine at the basic level). I recommend you contact the frame manufacturer whose design you like best. BTW, I used to build choppers back in the '60s and early '70s (before there were aftermarket frame builders, and almost no aftermarket motorcycle parts, we had to build or modify everything ourselves), and I suggest you ride a hardtail or two before you decide to go that route. They don't call them kidney-shakers for nothing. I agree, the "sport bike" riding position is horrible, but getting your insides, spine and teeth jarred continuously on a hardtail "chopper" is also akin to torture. I highly recommend going with a soft tail frame if you want to ride it frequently and/or for more than a couple of miles at a time. This is the voice of experience. 1)A chopper, either rigid or softtail, is not a road bike. They're good for bar hopping but you won't really be able to go anywhere on it. 2)How are you sitting on this bike? Sportbikes do not "crush your junk" if you are sitting on them properly. 3)Sell the Buell. Buy a 1200 Sportster. Install a pipe and jet kit. Problem solved. Sell it, sell it now!!!! If your sitting on a sport bike you probably don't have "junk" to crush in the first place. |
