I just started riding a few months ago and I'm constantly misjudging the gear I need to be shifting to. Sometimes I'll shift too low and sometimes too high. It's sort of chaotic and frustrating. I have 52/42/30 chainring and a 12-25 cassette on my bike. I've put some thought into it and I think that if I shift onto the proper chainring in anticipation (10 seconds) of going up or downhill, I can shft through the rear gears more smoothly as I complete the up or downhill stretch. Does this strategy make sense?
Yes you definitely need to anticipate the grade of the road and shift before you get on it. Especially when downshifting while going uphill. It becomes pretty tough to downshift when you are pushing up the hill. You will figure out what's comfortable after a while and get the hang of it. I've been biking for over 50 years. You are correct in shifting the crank chainring in anticipation. IT IS much easier and quicker to shift through the cassette gears. and if you say shift to your 42 ring and find you didn't quite need it you can just flick down to a another gear on the back. Be careful of too much chain angle. In a while you will find you ride in a few gears most the time anyway. damn ur smart lol
