Best bang for your buck on a $1,000 road bike? |
Going out bike shopping this weekend with a buddy who's just starting to ride. I want to find him a decent bike that he can "grow" into as a rider -- meaning something that is not so "beginner" that he's going to be embarrassed to ride it six months later. He's looking to spend about $1,000 on the bike, itself, with a couple hundred more set aside for the accessories he will need immediately (helmet, waterbottle cage, seat pack/flat kit, riding shorts etc). We're going to hold off on the computer, fancy jerseys, and clipless pedals for a couple months. A Felt F85 (full 105 gearing, carbon fork, carbon seat post, clipless pedals, etc.) is another great road bike that can be had for that kind of money. While most people don't know what a Felt bike is, they are well-known in the cycling community- especially among hardcore riders. Right now, Felt (like Cervelo) has become synonymous with triathlons, reaking havoc in mountain bike racing and are THE "Top Dogs" in BMX racing. They were in the Amgen Tour of California and many other big races ridden by the Slipstream/Powered by Chipotle Team. Also, a decent two or three year old used Ultegra or Dura Ace bike in excellent condition could be had for that much also. If that's what you decide, check craigslist. You'll find many there. Also, I agree with NC. Go to performancebike.com or nashbar.com for accessories. They will save you a ton even if you get big name brand stuff. For that price I'd go with the specialized allez elite... it is a great starter bike. Shimano 105 10spd., zerts inserts, BG saddle, carbon post and fork, absolutely nothing to be embarassed about this bike. A little better than its trek equiv (1500) but thats my opinion Need I say more... specialized.com For $1000 get the TREK 1500. This is 9 speed in rear and 3 in front (3x9 = 27). Good for beginner. You may later upgrade to 10 speed in about $150. Do NOT buy any other accessories other than the bike from the dealer place. Buy all your accessories (helmet, jersey, computer) from www.performancebike.com or www.nashbar.com. www.performancebike.com is better. They accept return like Wal-Mart. Dealer will reap you off if you buy any accessories from them. Specialized Allez series bikes are very good also check out the Giant OCR's, and the KHS Flites http://www.specialized.com specialized.com i have an 04 allez and im soon to get a 07 transition |
