Is it possible to convert a road bike to a hybrid? |
Like changing the tires/handle bars. Want more versatility and comfort. I'm a newbie to the bike world... and if its possible... how would i go about this? Its easier to convert a mountain bike to a hybrid. Hybrids tend to have wider tires and a structure closer to mountain bikes without full suspension. Its very easy to install straight handlebars but could be harder of you have the "Flight Deck" type brake levers, which double as gear shifters. Cyclocross tires are a little wider than traditional road tires and fit on 700C rims. A softer/wider seat would add to the comfort as well. If changing the brake levers and shifters is necessary, then it may be cheaper and easier to just buy a hybrid bike. The frame geometry will be more comfortable and upright too. I'm one of those fixed gear riding cult weirdos. It's possible, the handlebar changeout would be pretty simple, but the different wheel size might be a problem. Unless your new wheels were the same diameter as your road wheels, the brakes wouldn't align properly with the rim. Also the wider tires of a hybrid might have clearance issues on your road frame. You might be better off just leaving the road bike alone and buying a hybrid. That way, you'll have the option of riding either one. Yes, but it depends what type of riding you are doing, A straight forward handle bar swap is the most effective, check your forks for clearance and mearure how much space you have for wider/softer tyres. A more comfortable seat is no problem to install check your seat stem to see what seats will fit it. Basically seat & handlebars changed on any bike will make it instantly more comfortable. Just depends on how much you have to spend. It's all possible though. Check out prices of New bikes, if you are not that bothered about hi quality components its sometimes just as cheap if not cheaper to just get another bike. |
