How many links in a chain for a 14 speed road bike 7 X 2?

I bought such a bike on ebay knowing there was no chain so I am now sourcing a chain. Some sites talk about chains being suitable for numbers for gears however the ones that are more reasonably priced talk about number of links. I will be doing some quality comparisons, but like most of us would not to pay simply for a brand name when a cheaper, lesser known product maybe equal or even better.

This is not enough information to determine the correct answer.

Chain lengths for bicycle drivetrains are affected by the size of the chainrings (on the crankset), the size of the cassete or freewheel ('gears') on the rear wheel, and to a minor extent, the length of the frame's stays, which are the part of the frame between the rear wheel hubs and the center of the cranks (this is known as the "bottom bracket").

For instance, on a road bike with a 53-tooth chainring on the crank, with a largest rear cog (gear) of 25, a chain of 112 links will probably be the proper length. For more detailed instructions, please see:

Also, be aware that if the largest cog size is large enough, this will require a derailleur with a longer cage, which is the part with the tiny gear-like wheels (called "pulley wheels") that hold the chain in the proper line. Get your new chain run it around the largest ring at the front and the largest ring at the back. (Not threading the derailleur).

Where it meets up add two half links (one big one small) . Make sure that you have a different link at either end of the chain. Break it there.

When threaded up and joined this will be the right length for your bike.

In terms of chain. Pretty much all chains have a 1/2" pitch. The inside width will be either 1/8" or 3/32". The 1/8th are for single speed bikes(or bikes with hub gears.)

The chains for derailleur gears are 3/32" and very in outside width also. The number a rear cogs determines the maximum outside width of the chain required.

Count the cogs on your wheel. If you have say 7 cogs you buy a seven speed chain (or up to ten will work). If your have ten you can only use a ten speed chain. (same speed chain or higher will work)

Ten speed chain has the narrowest outside dimension. A wider chain (for lesser speeds) won't fit between the spaces in the rear cassette. May also foul rear derailleur.
Lots of info given so far. It's not as complicated as it may seem. Bikes and gears fit into a narrow range of size (chain wise) Almost all chains are sold at 114 or 116 links. If you buy one with a master link it's easier to size as you can put it on check and pull it off to remove links.

You will almost always have to remove some links with a chain tool. A bike shop can do this at a small cost but the tool is cheap as well.

The defining size measurement is it should fit on the large ring in front and large in back with out the derrailleur cage pulled out to the max - but it should be close to max. This is you max length needed.
