Want to buy a road bike w/a versatile ride that can also take knobby tires when needed. any ideas?

looked@Fuji/Trek/Giant bikes.

I would recommend a CycloX bike. Redline Conquest Pro, which I used to ride, good quality bike and better customer service. Cracked a chainstay on an 8 year old frame and they replaced the frame/fork with a brand new Conquest Pro for $200. I heard Konas are good. If you want to spend a lot for a good bike, you should look at Seven or Moots.
Maybe a cyclocross like a TREK XO-1.
I think the Cannondale Bad Boy Ultra is a nice bike. It comes with a set of 700cc wheels, disc breaks and reasonable components. Also. if you want, you can swap out the rims and throw on a set of mtb rims with knobby tires. The only problem is that the Bad Boy Ultra isn't exactly a road bike. However, it is very fast.

Very simple. You are looking for a cyclocross bike. On your computer, try to bring up some video of cyclocross races and you will see some of what these bikes can do.
Bianchi, Specialized, and Trek all make good cyclocross bikes

You actually have two options. You can get a cyclocross bike which is essentially a road bike geometry with some adaptation to handle offroad riding. Some good brands include Redline and Cannondale. The other option is to get a mountain bike and put slick tires for road riding. If you tend on doing predominantly road riding, go for the cross bike. If not, go for the mountain.
