What is a good road bike for San Francisco? What details and features are important in a road bike? because of the hills, you probably will want a triple chainring, or at least very low gearing other than that, just go to your local bike shops and look around you probably want to spend at least 600 to 800 bucks for a good road bike Definately buy a triple chainring. if you have a choice of rear cogs I would try for a 12-25 range. Don't get seduced by a compact double. They are fine for small hills or if you're a very powerful and light rider. I have one and have been riding for 7 years and even around here in Southern WI there are steep enough hills to make me wish I had gone with a triple. Otherwise most road bikes are fairly similar. A carbon frame will smooth out bumps on rough roads but an aluminium frame with carbon fork and seat post will be good as well and carbon can get expensive. Clipless pedals I feel are a must. If you've never riden them before don't be afraid of them. It only takes a shiort time to get used to them and the increased power trasnfer is well worth it. Check out what cyclists are riding there, it'll be your best advice. |
