I ride a road bike( pedal bike ) , what the fastest way to build up speed going up hill.? The best way to climb faster is to climb often. You only improve when you overstress your body and allow it to recover. So do climbing intervals (find a 3-5 minute hill and climb it repeatedly) and allow yourself a couple easy rides or a day off afterward. pedal faster Alot of it depends on your leg strength if you want to build up speed going up a hill. But choosing the right gear will help out some. Proper downshifting in anticipation of and during a climb is an art. It involves not only timing but also judgement of exactly what gear is right for the slope you are on. Think of your pedal stroke as a golfer does his swing... keep your body motion constant and let the equipment handle the change. Practice on a short, steep hill. As you reach the bottom of the incline and go up the climb, time your downshifts such that you never change your pedal cadence. If you have a short sharp hill then get out of the saddle and sprint up, (I tend to get down onto the drops for these) Avoid rocking your bike, try to keep a sense of style. On a longer climbs remain seated and ride with your hands on the hoods, pulling on the bars as you pedal. Gearing is down to your ability and experience but basically you need a gear that is reasonably easy to pedal in, its better to spin up, than struggle!! If you think its too easy then by all means change up! Try to keep a steady rhythm. I ride a compact with short cranks, so this is what works for me, if you are a powerful rider then buy all means select a higher gear and lug your way up! Hope this helps mate! Get stronger and get lighter. Both of which are going to come with lots of miles. On long climbs you can buy yourself quite a bit of time right now just by learning to relax and not let your upper body tense up. |
