Question for a road bike coach.?

I would like to know what a good cyclist, who is roughly 40 years old, would average (mph) on flats (with a few small hills). I am 40 years old, with a good carbon frame Trek. I think of myself a "good cyclist". I don't race but may want to enter a few races if I can get my speed up.

I'd say I'm a fast non-racer (used to race back in the day) I only get about 60 miles in a week now. I'm in my late 40's and usually ride 20 to 22 (22 on a good day) on flats for 20 miles or so with no wind. When riding with non racers 21 seems to be the limit of most guys without drafting.

Drafting in a short beginner race - speeds will be 22 - 24. Usually 1 or 2 riders will lead and push this speed everyone else needs to draft to maintain. If you can do 19-20 alone you can hang in a race like this no problem. Source(s): `
If you can average 17-19 mph by yourself, then you'll probably be able to hang with groups that average around 20 - 22 mph over long distances. This speed will put you on par with the top recreational (non-racing) cyclists.

Racers - now that's a different story. A good amateur racer can average 25 - 27 mph in a flat 25 mile time trial with the aid of some aero equipment. They'll probably average around 20 - 24 mph if you get a group of these guys together for a hammerfest.
25 years on the road - a few of those racing.
hes about right but id say 18-20 for recreational/semi into it people
racers can definatly average alot higher over faster times
criterium racers will average atleast 22 even as juniors and cat 5s the lowest catagory
no there is a difference between being along training, and being in a pack drafting. alone, very few could maintain 24-25mph, but in a pack it isnt bad. i would say if you can stay in the 20's during most of your ride, start racing. from there you'll get experience and find out what you need to do. believe it or not, most master's races actually end up with higher speeds than the younger ones for some reason. i think mainly because in the masters there are less games going on.
