I need a road bike under $500 for a triathlon. I'm 6'7" 210lbs. Any Suggestions?

Man there are some rude people here. I mean, I understand if it's a dumb question, but this is legit. sheesh.

Anyway, in that part of the price range you really get a lot more bang if you shell out a few more bucks. Get above $1k or so and the ROI curve flattens out.

The thing that'll fail for a guy like you is the wheels, so you want to pay careful attention and get a bike with 32 or 36 spokes per wheel, not one of these ultralight aero sets with like 9 spokes. Bad.

I second bikesdirect.com, they have a good reputation among the bike snobs - they give good products and good service and their prices are classic "importer direct" great.

Here's one you'd probably be happy with:

Get the 62cm frame size. Budget in that you're going to spend more to swap out some things to get the fit just right - handlebar stem and saddle probably.

Or this one, it comes in a 64cm which should fit you better.

At 6foot 7 not many makers have sizes for you so be picky - you don't want to be cramped on a bike too small for you because of a price point.

I assume that you are just starting out with triathlons and riding. The question I have is how serious do you think you are about triathlons. For $500, you are not going to get much for a new bike. Raleigh makes a bike in about that price range, but I think most "low-end" bikes are going to be closer to $750 - 850 and go up from there. You might do better with a traditional road bike than a tri-bike or TT-bike. What you might want to do is look for a used bike in good condition.

Start with looking at your local bike shops (not K-Mart). They often have boards posting bikes for sale. They may also have some or know of someone wanting to get rid of a bike. Next stop might be Craig's List. Also, look on Yahoo for cycling groups or clubs in your area (Yahoo Groups). You can probably post on one of these sites your desire to purchase a bike.

If you find one, the key is finding out what condition the bike is in and how old it is. There are a lot of people out there that just want to upgrade.
This is like the 3rd "I need a bike for a tri in a week, 2 weeks..." in the last 10 days... What do you guys train on if you don't have a bike? If you didn't even train for this borrow a friend's bike... I guess not too many fit you hey?

You are going to have difficulty, my friend. The key to any bike is that it first must be the appropriate size. There isn't a manufacturer in the entire field that makes a bike big enough for you. To really get a bike that fits, you will have to get a custom bike.

If it will help, here are the basics:
1) Get a road bike, not a tri bike
2) Start with a good frame that is the right size. Even if everything else will later need to be upgraded (when/if you decide to invest), at least you won't have to start from scratch.
3) Make sure that you go to a bike shop with knowledgeable people who can takeyour measurements and/or 'fit-kit' you.
4) If someone tells you about carbon this or that, know that he/she is full of crap because at $500 and the limitations of the weight-bearing capacity of carbon, there is just no way that anything carbon will be related to your new bike.

Good luck.
