Do not purchase until you have a good idea of what is comfortable. Trying lots of bikes will get you there. Second, what type of riding are you going to do? Are you going to race? Aluminum or Carbon Fiber might be a good idea. Are you going to stick to recreational riding and club rides? Steel may be your best choice or if you are on the heavier side, Aluminum may work too. After that, you should have a no problem finding a great bike for you...which is much better than a great bike for me since you will be the one riding it. Experience from working at a bike shop. First, find a good bike shop. One that will fit the bike and provide after the sale service. Today, many of the frames that you buy in that price range have been made in the same factory. Each brand will vary its design but from material and construction standpoint, not lots of difference. You should however try these bikes as they will have slightly different fits. Find the one that fits the best. Most likely the same component group will be offered on all of these bikes. I am not trying to sell a bike but one thing to consider is how often you buy a bike. I suggest that if you know you are going to be riding a lot, stretch the budget a bit and get the most bike you can. If you only buy a bike once every 5 years, spending an extra hundred is like spending an extra 20 bucks per year. Your Starbucks bill is higher than that. Don't be afraid to check around for last year's model as well. If they have your size, you can get a considerable mark down and not that much difference this year.
