I am new to biking and want a good affordable road bike...any ideas? You can't go wrong with a Schwinn!! scot is a good bike He said affordable, Scott is not. OP, how much do you want to spend? Around $600 should get you started. Look at the Trek 1000,Specialized Allez,Giant OCR 3, bottom line Felt bike to name a few. A budget would really help us answer your question. I too am new to biking, and just purchased a new road bike. I was caught between spending over $600 dollars on an entry level bike from the local bike shop, and spending half that on a road bike at wal-mart. I plan on using my bike for commuting to and from work, and the occasional trip to the park with the kids. Since I'm not a serious biker, and don't plan on getting competitive with it, I choose the cheep wal-mart bike. Here is the bike I purchased http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.d... The STI shifters that are on this bike sell for $150, and are equiped on some of the $600 bikes that you would purchase at a bike shop. I would say your decision depends on how much you plan on riding, and how much time you want to spend fine tuning your bike. A bike purchased at wal-mart will require a lot of adjusting, even before you first ride it. A $600 bike at the bike shop will already be fine-tuned, and won't requre you to tinker with it even after you ride it a bit. I hope this helps. REI, good value good bikes (Novarra) rei bikes are heavy pos that are too god damn expensive and the rest of the china bikes are the same. try a good american bike lik cannondale.
