What is the best road bike to get for under $800? |
What is the best road bike to get for under $800? I saw a very nice Specialized Allez today at Old Town Bicycles in Tacoma, WA. I was impressed with it because it had a great wheelset, all Shimano Sora 8-speed components and a beefy looking aluminum frameset. And it was very red, which is cool. I think the Jamis Ventura Comp looks like a smoking deal too. It has a compact FSA crank too, which is an upgrade from the Allez, and an all-Tiagra driveline which is an upgrade from the Sora stuff. It's all pretty good, but why not go up a level for the same money? I'm amazed at what you can get for that price point nowadays. Trickle-down technology is great. I'm still riding my 1994 KIein with just a few upgrades from the original Shimano sub-105 group, but it was twice what you're looking to pay, way back then. Good luck! Source(s): Bicycling magazine, for turning me on to the Jamis, and lots of bike-shop time. check out the Trek 1000. It was called the best bike for the price (under 1000) in many magazines in 2007. All the components work well with the bike and as a whole, it is a great starter bike to get into road biking or to use for workouts. Trek is a wonderful starter bike. Once I outgrew to 20 inch bike phase I picked up a Trek 800 mountain track bike and I have rode that same bike ever since. Gotta put street tires on if you just plan to roam the pavement. The Jamis Satellite and Aurora has similar spec to a Ventura. I think the steel frame is smoother more comfortable ride than aluminum, especially at this price point, My only nitpick is I don't like the Jamis graphics. http://www.jamisbikes.com/usa/bikes/07_b... I am really starting to like Tommaso. They are available at http://rscycle.com and most of them are at a steep discount. They have an Ultegra equipped bike for under $800... almost unheard of. They are worth taking a look at, at the very least. In full disclosure, I know the people that specced out Tommaso, but I also know a lot of people in the industry who might take offense at not recommending their stuff so I calls 'em as I see's 'em. |
