What is the best performing road bike.? |
What is the best performing road bike.? A large portion of the time choosing a road bike comes down simply to preference. There are so many good bikes these day's, it truly comes down to the buyers opinion. It all depends on the material frame you want, components, etc. For me, I like stiff, small, I like aluminum, I use and prefer 38mm bars, and ultegra because it is cheap and easier to replace when I crash it. I must say though, I have had a couple of Specialized frames and I absolutely love them! I had the Allez about 3-4 yrs ago, and an S-Works E5 which I have had for a couple of yrs and was and still am completely satisfied. I have also had a couple of Fujis, and I think they are just okay. This is a pretty subjective question. It depends on your metrics for performance. Do you value comfort? Stiffness? Lightweight? The list goes on and on... That said, IMHO, I'm sticking with a Cyfac Nerv. Cyfac is a small builder in France who just happens to build bikes for some of the sport's top names. Fignon, Brochard, Millar, Longo, to name a few. Even Bobby Julich has ridden one (Starship tubing, painted as an MBK). Francis Quillon (Cyfac's founder) is also the designer of the Airplane and Starship tubesets for Columbus, one of the industry's recognized leaders in frame materials. He's now developed his own tubesets for Cyfac - Proxydium and Nerv. These are both aluminum based tubesets. The Nerv is a mix of aluminum, zinc, and magnesium. the fork, chainstays, and seatstays are all built from Cyfac's own T-800 carbon tubing - designed by four time Formula One World Champion Alain Prost. The bike rides very well. It's predictable yet responsive. It decends like a dream, sticking to the road like glue. There's no skittish behavior from the bike, where the bike feels like it might get away from the rider. The bottom bracket area is laterally stiff - the bike goes when you stomp on the pedals. The carbon does a great job of absorbing a lot of road shock. The Nerv's double-stay helps eliminate a lot of the road vibration. All in all, the bike performes well in road races AND criteriums. It's stable and predictable, yet it accelerates efforlessly when you want it to. http://veloeuropa.com/product_nerv.shtml... I just purchased a Trek Pilot 5.2 (full carbon, ultegra components) and I absolutely love it! Additionally, the Trek Superstore I purchased it from if phenomenal. A Rivendell, no question about it. It's the best bike in the world. |
