Where would one ride their road bike? |
im not good enough to ride on an actuall street where alot of cars go, maybe in my neighborhood but where else could i ride it? A bicycle is considered a vehicle, the same as a car or truck. You MUST ride on the road surface, in the same direction as traffic, following all the rules that pertain to motor vehicles. The only exception is that you cannot ride on major highways (even on the shoulder) without prior clearance from the local cops ... like for a major charity ride. You can pratice your skills in an off-road area, like a parking lot. This will improve your bike handling and balance ... but try to do it when the lot isn't busy, or you'll have even more difficulty with the number of parked cars and folks not looking for a cyclist. In some areas, there are bike paths - a search on the web or a call to your local parks department will give you the low-down on what's in your area. The drawback here is the number of non-cyclists using the same pathways ... with little room to maneuver around slower pedestrian traffic, it may turn out to be a bigger challenge than simply riding with the motor vehicles. There are always streets that have less traffic, too ... try county roads, or streets and cul-de-sacs in a subdivision, or even some of the less-traveled sidestreets in downtown. Just remember to obey all the traffic laws - you are a vehicle in the eyes of the law. If you feel that the roads in your area are overwhelming due to the traffic, I suggest finding some bike paths. In Michigan they are all over, from Metro to State parks and even paths next to major Interstates and Highways. The internet is a great place to start looking, just type in bike paths and your location and I am sure something will pop up. Experience. parking lot (to train ur balance and skill) side walks (uneven grounds to practice) and finally streets to ride with the cars good luck on the road. you ride with traffic and follow traffic laws. i am not a big fan of bike paths. around here too many walkers, runners and others use them. mixing bikes moving 18-20mph with that slow traffic is dangerous. i find the paths far more dangerous than the roads. |
