What's the best steel framed road bike? |
What's the best steel framed road bike? I agree about Serotta, but look also at Steelman. Many years ago I had a wonderful Bob Jackson (sadly stolen) and later a Gillott (now part of Raleigh). Both were great road bikes. Bob Jackson is still going - the frame is made exactly to your specifications - truly handbuilt. I don't know anything about Brian Baylis - but I am intrigued by what I read of his handbuilt machines. See links below. Source(s): For interesting steel info go here: http://www.reynoldscycles.co.uk/steel853... http://www.desperadocycles.com/reynolds_... http://www.worldclasscycles.com/jackson-... http://www.classicrendezvous.com/usa/bay... probably a serotta Surly has a whole line of steel bikes, road and off-road, touring and racing. $400-$450 for the frame. Don't buy these if you're concerned about having a status symbol. These are basic, durable, affordable frames. www.surlybikes.com If you need something more custom, you might look at Co-motion. Although they're primarily tandem makers, they have excellent road bikes as well. www.co-motion.com These guys are not cheap, but they have a history of outfitting people who set out on 25,000 mile rides. There are a lot of other who also make decent bikes. Just depends on how much you want to spend. I have only ridden steel frame road bikes, I can't see the lure of any other material if you aren't Greg Lemond or something at that caliper. I would say the Serotta's are the most desirable. |
