Why do a majority or carbon road bike come in a double and not triple nowdays? |
it would seem most better than average but not professional recreational riders would want the triple for both climbing and weekly speed rides? on road bikes, the carbon frames are usually purchased by people who know what they are doing and have been riding a while, so they really don't need a triple a double will do just fine for someone who is in good shape and has been riding a while very easy actually: if you are older, slower, or very heavy, get a triple if you are a hammerhead or gear head, get a double The disadvantage with a triple is that the cranks are further apart giving that ' riding a big donkey' feeling. Also, my mates would rip the p**s out of me ! lol As a recreational rider though, you may find it useful over steep climbs. The inner 'Granny' ring also adds extra weight. A good compromise is a compact chainset which gives a good spread of gears. In addition to this most reasonable riders (who spend their money on Carbon) don't need the third ring. Double = 53 Outer. 39 Inner. Triple = 53/42/30 Compact = 50/34 Hope this helps. Serious, really serious bikes only have doubles. Triples are heavier and they shift harder. Plus triples are for wimps. Professional recreational riders? I think you just coined a new tech term! Here's my 2 cents: 1. They are rarely, and in my case never needed. I live in Michigan - the terrain is flat to rolling hills. I haven't have my chain off the big ring in years (no lie) I'm not sure it will even shift, I better check it out, hang on a sec ........................ OK I'm back it DOES shift to the small ring! 2. Serious weenpod factor. In non mountainous areas, it's a sure sign ya don't know what ya really need. Other WP factors - wheel reflectors and spoke protectors. 3. For the highly weight conscious, big derailleur cage, more chain, extra ring, longer BB axle... un-needed weight and equipment... we are too anal to handle that. 4. A double with a 27 rear cog should get you up anything if you're not packed up for touring - If Contador can do it so can we professional recreational riders! In all seriousness it's simply rarely needed for most riders. If they were selling they'd make 'em. And contrary to your question I say why do so many bikes have triples when the rides never use 'em? Gotta second the previous opinions. I have never used the small ring on my mtn or road bikes and it is adding unecessary weight on the road bike. On the mtn bike, it is nice because when the chain slips off the middle ring, it goes onto that one instead of off to the inside and I can fix it with pedalling and don't have to stop and fix it. Heck, my wife rides an old, somewhat poorly maintained mtn bike with knobby tires on the road and she never uses it. |
