What is the difference between TREK 1000 road bike with a Flat bar and Curved bar??? In addition to the aerodynamics, there is one other important consideration. A flat bar bike (regardless of manufacturer) is usually supplied with "trigger" shifters; these can be traded out for roatable "grip" shifters in most instances. This makes changing gears quite easy, even while wearing winter gloves or mitts. Additionally, the brake system is independent of the gearing - hence, if something goes wrong you're only replacing one system or the other. A hooked bar bike (regardless of manufacturer) is often equipped with a modified version of "triggers" ... they're often associated with the brake lever/hood assembly. In this case, if something goes wrong with the brakes or shifting, the whole system has to be replaced (at typically higher cost). Most riders who have "hooked" bars actually ride with their hands on the long crosspiece, switching occasionally to a more forward postion on the brake 'hoods'. This means they're not taking advantage of the aerodynamics of the drops ... which in turn means they could just as comfortably be riding a flat bar. Curved bar allows a better aerodynamic position in the drops. The flat bar offers a more heads up position, which is great in higher traffic situations. The flat bars offer a single comfortable hand position. The curved bar has multiple hand positions which is really great for longer rides. So go with the flat if riding in the city on shorter rides, otherwise go with the curved bar. |
