How fast should I be able to go on a road bike as an adult beginner?

I'm somewhat of a beginner myself. This year I've put in about 200 miles mostly on the Ohio-Erie Canal Towpaths. It's a lot of crushed gravel mixed with some pavement in the higher-traffic, family-friendly areas. My wife goes with me on some of the rides and is a beginner as well. She gets a good workout going 11-13 MPH for 10-15 miles. When I'm biking by myself, I tend towards 13-15 MPH. This weekend I did my first "distance" ride of 33 miles (Cleveland to Akron) and my odometer said my average speed was 12.6 MPH. As a side note, I'm really paying for that ride today. I've got to invest in some bike shorts.

It really is all about what you feel is good for you. If you're rolling along and not breaking a sweat, it's time to pick up the pace. If you find that you're wheezing and your legs are on fire, slow down and drop a few gears.
Sustained - about 4-5 mph.
Almost as fast as your guardian angel can fly.

In all seriousness, you need to ease into a road bike. Adults are prone to the same mistakes that juveniles are, and adults tend to make them on more expensive equipment. Don't go above a speed that you're completely capable of handling the bike at. You'll be surprised how quickly you get the feel for it. Patience, yeah?

I've been into road biking for a few months now and 15mph was a comfortable pace right away. And that wasn't even an all out road bike, that was my flat bar road bike (Giant FCR3). So in decent wind conditions, on road tires, 12-15mph is realistic. But what really matters, is what feels like a workout to you? If you're real out of shape and 7mph gets you huffing and puffing, then 7 is your speed. If you're in good shape and 15mph doesn't even break a sweat, then you need to pick up the pace.
I agree that it is about the workout, however, around 18 - 20Kph is fine. You should really be looking at distance around the same distance as the speed which should take you around 50% more time. This should be increased gradually and try to keep a regular cadence (rotations per min). In no time you will be averaging 30kph over 50KLM and looking for more. Divide by 8 muliply by 5 to convert KLM to MPH (app) And above all don't forget to stop for the mandatory coffee break.
