What kind of shoes do I wear when riding a road bike with speedplay x/1 pedals? Specialized or Sidi are your best bet. Source(s): www.specialized.com You would need to get a road shoe, it has no tread on the bottom(basically slick except for a heel plate or knob) and is set to handle the majority of the cleats for the clipless pedals. A mountain shoe looks like a hiking or tennis shoe tread on the bottom and the cleat is recessed into the sole. This shoe will handle any cleat using the 2 bolt side by side pattern. Road shoes usually start at about $80 and go up from there depending on the brand and features. Some brands include Nike, Specialized, Sidi, Diadora, DMT , and Carnac.
