Is it OK to use 3 in1 oil to lube a road bike chain?

some say it attracts a lot of dirt...

I would prefer to use a lube specially designed for bike chains myself, but you can use a 3-in-1.

Most likely it will attract some more dirt then the actual bike lube... depending on what/where you're riding.

A buddy of mine used WD40 one day because he needed some lube and didn't have anything else handy. He went on a ride through the dusty SoCal mountains and his chain was gummed up pretty good by the time the ride was over. I used some actual bike chain oil, and just had a light coating of dust on my chain.

If you're roading it and dirt/dust/grime isn't really a concern... well, go for it. Just make sure you let it dry up pretty good before you ride so it's not so sticky for crap to get on the chain. Source(s): personal experience
I always did. Any lube will attract dirt.
any lube will attract dirt -- you might try graphite,
but 3 in 1 will work just fine
Not a good idea. If it's a decent bike, I'd go to a bike shop and see what they have.
Basically, what you need is some sort of oil/grease and then something to thin it out a bit to deliver it. 3in1 should be fine: http://www.wd40.com/brands/3in1.cfm...
If you look on the forums on www.roadbikereview.com you'll see a lot of us use a home brew formula. This consists of 3 parts of odorless mineral spirits mixed with 1 part synthetic mobile 1 motor oil. You just put it on very liberally, spin the chain a bit, then let it sit overnight so the spirits evaporate off and leave the oil where you want it. I rub the heck out of the chain with a rag after I apply it to get rid of the excess, but some wait till the next day to do it. Regardless, you dont need oil on the outside of the chain and this will attract dirt.
Reasoning for using this over bikeshop stuff, its cheaper. It isn't any better, but if you compare the cost of 3oz of bikeshop oil, it comes close to the cost of a big can of spirits and bottle of oil. So, you can use it after every few rides.
Also, you can wipe the chain down at the ends of rides to get rid of any excess dirt picked up.
There are special lubes that minimize dirt attract just for chains. I use White Lightening. Most are a wax based lube. I own high end gear and the $9 I spent on it will last me many years.

3 in 1 will surely work. Clean your chain drip some on evenly as you spin the cranks slowly. Not too much. Let it seep in for a few minutes wipe it dry with a rag. You don't need much lube on the outside of the chain. The interior parts need the lube. If you have derailleurs and use too much and don't wipe it clean it will muck up your cassette, chain rings and jockey wheels but good.
