Any Top Tips for riding pillion on a hard and fast powerful road bike? |
From a new -to -the -thrills -of- motorcyle- riding fanatic. You should get a little briefing before your first ride. The main points are: 1. Keep your feet on the pegs. Don't put them down when the rider puts his down, because you don't know when he's going to take off and you can get a really bad twisted ankle. 2. Lean with the bike. You steer a bike by leaning, so let HIM steer the bike. You want to be a 'dead load'. Hopefully he won't lean it over really far to try to impress you. 3. The best thing to hold onto is to have your arms around the driver's waist. When I used to give rides to cute girls, I told them the had to hold as close to me as possible, something about consolidating the center of gravity. But seriously, the rider is the best thing to hold onto, unless there's a backrest or sissy bar, and then you can just put your hands on your knees. 4. There is a whole language of signals for communicating. Two taps on the left shoulder means 'I gotta pee!' Something like that. But you should work out signals for 'Why did you do that?' or 'Hey, you're scaring me!' or 'Stop right now or I'll jump!' I LOVE motorcycling and I know you will too. Good luck! Act like part of the bike so as not to throw off the balance around corners - hence pillion back rests, grab handles etc. Depending on the rider they may prefer you to hang onto them so they don't have to second guess where your weight's going. Ask just to be safe. Make sure they wrap there arms around you waist, not tight, and get them to mimic you..... Ok most things are covered above. Lean with the rider etc etc. But I find that keeping your eyes level to the horizon/road when you go around corners helps heaps! If you lean your head with your body you feel like your going to fall. The rider will keep their eyes horizontal to the road. The other thing is to watch it when they take off and stop. The momentum and weight of the helmet will make you tap their helmet with your own. Try to keep your head back a bit when there pulling up to a stop and lean back just a little when there about to take off again. My signal to the rider if there going too hard is two taps to the upper thigh. You can do it quickly with out letting go too much! The only other advise ....... get your own bike and quick!! :-) Once I got my own bike (15 years ago!) I couldn't stand being a pillion. Have fun! Vrooooom Vroooom! And Hey! Mr Knowitall, yes you, back up the page a bit.... why assume the rider is a guy!?!? Yes. The pillion seat on sportbikes is an afterthought, and it is much less safe than riding your own motorcycle. So forget it. Buy your own motorcycle. |
