How much should it cost to install a new stem on a road bike? |
I'm looking to replace my old stem with a new one I just purchased. How much should it cost to do this takeoff/install? Both estimates on time above could be correct. This could be a quick 5 minute process or a 2 hour swear fest. The deciding factor is the type of stem you have. If your stem is a newer stem (same with the one you bought) and there are 2-4 bolts in the front of the stem where the handle bar goes then it is a quick 5 minute swap. If you don't feel comfortable doing this the bike shop should do it for $5-10 max. If on the otherhand you have an old school stem with a single bolt underneath the portion where the handlebars go then your in for an ordeal. The only way to remove the handle bar with this type of stem is to lossen that bolt and remove all of the bar tape from one side of the handlebar along with removing the brake levers. You then twist the handlebar through the stem to take it off. If you then have one of the newer stems with bolts in the front you can quickly put it back on the bike but you will still have a time putting your brake levers back on and retaping the handlebar. If a bike shop does this expect to spend about $30-40. About two hours of your time were you to have the tool! two hours??!!...i can have mine off in 5 min. or so. its very simple. It won't be cheap as they have to remove the handle bars,tape, ect...Probably $50+. Shouldnt take more than 10min to change and reset the bars. Do it yourself. i dont know how your bike is built, but the roadies ive seen have threadless forks. so all you really need is a 5mm hex wrench to unbolt it. slide the new bars on, and bolt it back on. |
