Will they inspect my bike for the road test? |
I'm taking my road test tomorow here in MA. My bike runs fine but the rear brake doesn't work at all. Will the trooper be doing an inspection on my bike or will he just watch me ride? I have no idea what to expect. Where I live, if your bike does not have all mechanical parts functioning at 100% you cannot take the test. When the person giving me my test told me to press the rear brake they make me stand up with one foot down and the other on the brake and try to push the bike forward with the brake depressed. My bike was not allowed to move otherwise, no test for me. Here's a suggestion though, it might help you fix your back brake. (Your back brake must be a drum for this to work.) There is a knob, maybe a screw, maybe a nut on the back of the bike near the brake that adjust the tension of the brake. If you tighten this adjuster you should be able to get your rear brake functioning. Worst case, buy the service manual (Clymer's is good) and figure out how to correct the rear brake. The process is fairly simple with the manual and the manual is a good thing to have anyhow since bikes are not that hard to repair anyhow. Hope this helps, good luck with your test and safe riding! Source(s): Been there, done that....a few times They will instruct you to apply your rear brake. If the light doesn't work, you may get deducted for that. I'm not sure the rear brake alone would be enough for you to fail the test, though. Could only be a minor obstacle... They will inspect for mandatory equipment, mirrors, signals, etc. Is it your rear brake that mechanically doesn't work, or is it the brake light that doesn't work? When I took mine they just checked to make sure the signals and lights and such worked. They didn't check the brakes or anything. But they do want you to use both brakes, so still press on the back brake when you stop. I would think it depends on who you get to give you the test. You might get someone picky who'll check to make sure they work. So try your luck, then get that brake fixed. It's on the bike for a good reason and when you're on two wheels don't halfass it. |
