What is the strangest thing you've ever had thrown at you while riding your road bike? |
For me it was chocolate donuts while riding in Newport Beach California. I'll have to tell you the full story While riding home after work, I noticed a set of car headlights hovering at some distance behind for an unusually long time. I was waiting for the standard half smart comment when the car started approaching. My usual approach in this situation is to try and ignore it and leave myself enough room to bail if necessary. Well as the car goes past nothing and then out of the corner of my eye I catch this florescent green blur. I reel back just in time for it to narrowly miss my face. It hit me in the shoulder and rolls down onto my arm. It took me a moment to catch myself and work out what it was. Heelloooooo a G-string. In eager anticipation I look up to see this bare bum hanging out the car's window disappearing into the darkness. I suddenly became most disappointed when I noticed a sack complete with pair of agates hanging just below. Yeah a full range of emotions that night fear, anticipation , shock, surprise, elation ,expectation ,bitter disappointment and disgust. (Releif when I realised how close it came landing in my face) An RV. A Winnebago 24 footer, if I recall correctly. It was quite unsettling. I ended up bailing into the ditch, stayed upright. Some girls went by my bike in a convertible, and they threw lit fire-crackers at me. Fireworks. 1. a newspaper from the back of a van delivering papers (this was quite dangerous because the van was going at least 50 mph and we were riding around 25 mph) 2. a dead seagull (yes, it was dead before it was thrown at us) Maybe you looked really hungry? Or maybe you intruded into another Californian's "bubble" and they took offense. Oddly enough, I've never had anything but unintelligible insults thrown at me in 17 years of riding. What makes people think that rolling down the window and screaming, "YUU THALASSA FLACA BILI-TATA! HAA HA HA!" is going to make me think twice about riding? Maybe they're saying something meaningful, but that's about all I can understand. Three strange things, actually: The first, back in 1983 20 years ago, was a SNOWBALL ... on June 20th, in Eastern Canada. It hit, and man! it stung! The second was last year, in late April 2006 in central Texas. A farmer was unloading their wagon near the side of the road and one of his chicken cages broke loose as I went by. The farmer swiped at the bird, and succeeded in knocking the thing off the back of the wagon and just missed me by less than three feet. Talk about a squawk! The last occurred in late April of 2006 as well ... on the same ride as the chicken. Another farm about 15 miles up the road (on the other side) was moving rectangular hay bales from storage out to the pasturage. The loader (who was standing nearly in the ditch on the far side of the vehicle from me) pitched a bale up to the farmer on the back of the open-bed truck. Well, one of the bales missed the farmer and sailed sompletely over the truck bed - hitting my rear wheel and causing me to bail onto the pavement. The bike received minimal damage (some paint scrapes and a broken spoke), while I got a great-looking road burn because I hadn't managed to unclip in time. I have been urinated upon last year while I was riding to school... |
