What is the difference between a clincher and a tubular tire for a road bike?

Pauly's answer gives you the essense of the differences. Now, as for using the different kinds....

Tubulars used to have huge advantages on road feel as well as lightness. Now, clinchers are just as good for road feel and for holding onto the rim.

Repairing them is a major difference. Sew-ups cost a hunk of money, so you tend to want to fix the flats rather than throw them out. But first you have to pry them out of the glue which holds them to the rim, then unsew the tire to get at the tube. Fix the hole, then reverse the process.

That amount of time is why racers who don't have support vehicles (like triathletes) carry a spare tubular in case of flats.

And you can't ride on a newly glued on tire-to-rim combination for 24 hours, if you like a bit of safety. The glue has to dry and set. And it is messy to put on the tire and to get the tire around the rim without getting glue all over the edges of the rim, which then rubs on the brakes.

Note that in races, you carry a pre-glued tire as a spare. Then put it onto the rim which has existing glue and you hope that the glue from the tire and the glue from the rim meld together as you race along.

by Donna - yes, I rode on sewups in the 70's when there was a big difference, now I ride clinchers that cost lots and so are light and have good road feel, without the hassle.
A clincher is the type of tire most bikes have now, which consists of a innertube and a separate tire. The tire usually is beaded, and is held onto the wheel by wedging the beads underneath the lip of the wheel. A tubular on the other hand is all in one, a inner tube and a tire all in one. They are also called sew-ups since you essentially sew the tube inside the tire. They are then glued onto the tire. Pros used to use tubulars because of the weight advantage, and the fact they were less prone to pinch flats. The technology now is such that the weight of clinchers is comparable, and the pinch flats have been minimize.
