I am about to buy a used bike to run on trails in washington state. I am not sure which bike will be good for me. Will it be road or hybrid.
Hybrid A road bike is designed to be ridden on asphalt, or a velodrome. If you plan on riding trails, I'd reccomend eiether a dedicated mountain bike (26" wheels, gears, possibly a suspension fork) or a cyclocross bike (700c wheels, gears, NO suspension). If you plan on riding well groomed urban/suburban paths and dirt roads, get a 'cross bike or a hybrid. If your intended rides will be on ROUGH gnar-gnar trails with rocks, ruts, roots, etc, get a mountain bike. Surly's cross-check is a great cyclocross bike that can be had for about a grand with decent(not racer-X) type components. Awesome steel frame. However, you are in the pacific NW, and steel rusts, so you might be better off with an aluminum framed bike. Check out Kona Bikes. They make road, mtn, cross, and I think even BMX bikes at every price point. I currently ride a Kona Unit single speed, and it's great.
Good Luck!
