Why is there hardley any single cylinder road bikes available any more?

It seems like the most fun bikes I've owned were (and are) single cylinder bikes, or thumpers. the rare chance a new one comes out magazine testers say it is the most fun and reminds them why they ride motorcycles. Why then are there so few? And if there are any they are usually a dirt/street bike like the DRZ400. I think the suzuki savage (S40) is the only road bike other than the funky Buell Blast but I want something modern and sporty, much like the yamaha SRX600 or honda GB500, maybe the (not-available) yamaha MT-03 or the Derbi Mulhacen Cafe. Even BMW discontinued their (weird, expensive) F650CS. What gives?

i can only speak about the derbi that you mentioned. most are two stroke, and if you're in the u.s., then you know that emission laws can be tough. two strokes over 100cc's really don't pass in places like cali. most people in the u.s. want more than 250cc's so we don't have a demand for the smaller cc bikes. i personally love my gpr 75cc bike. it's the closest i'll ever get to a ducati 916 without the price tag.
If the public don't buy them the manufacturers won't make them. Two cylinders are smoother, 3 even better, 4 is the ultimate, smoooth.
