What do you use to repair road rash on sport bike plastic fairings? Plain and simple old fashioned Bondo will work just fine. Assuming they are not cracked and just scratched up of course. Body work is body work when it comes to metal and hard plastic. Flexible bumpers are a bit different though. They make a product called "icing" for scratches not really deep and "icing" bonds with paint as well as metal or plastic so getting all the paint off is not as critical as it is with regular bondo type stuff. An insurance claim! Depends how deep? Bondo or if very deep fiberglass and resin, then bondo. I don't know if this applies, but I repaired my rear cowl when it got scratched up. This is the same ABS material that my fairing is made of, so I assume this will work on fairings as well. I got some of that black ABS piping from my local hardware store and melted it in a small can. I used a spatula to apply the plastic on to the scratches and cracks, and worked it around so that it was thinly distrubuted. I let it dry and I sanded it down flat. Then by using thinner and thinner grades of sandpaper, you can get it down to a very smooth surface. Then you buff or polish it and it will shine like new. My bike is black, so I didn't have to paint it, but you can apply paint over it if required. I know that a kit is sold for plastic welding, but can't seem to find it with a google search ("plastic welding motorcycle") right now. I remember that one was tested by Motorcycle Consumer News in the last year or two. The above google search also provided lots of links to local shops that do this kind of work. Good luck! |
