Is it legal to ride a dirt bike on the side of the road in Wilmington, North Carolina? |
I have a small dirt bike, but it's too big to be considered a scooter and doesn't have lights or signals, so it can't be considered a motorcycle. I'm stuck in the middle with no place to ride. I could use some advise. Nope. The state and the feds claim at least a 20' easement from the edge of the pavement. Which means that if your 15' off the pavement you are still considered to be on the road and subject to all laws and regulations accordingly. Ride in the ditch, find some 2 track... ask some land owners for permission. All else fails just ride when they pull you over ask them where at then????? I agree...probably a prime consideration is the fact that even if you are 21 feet off the road, you are obviously travelling on someone elses land and are apt to encounter a 1/4 inch steel cable across your path at 30 mph. Ouch! Sorry, no can do. I live in NC and have gotten in trouble a couple times doing that going from one trail entry point to another. |
