don't be afraid to look online for mountain bikes. lower cost ,better selection, and if you are out of state than no state sales tax. Here's an example of some acceptable bikes for getting around off road:

It's important that you buy the right size bike for your build, so do go out and try a few bikes out and see how they feel.

Sounds like you need a mountain bike. Your local bike shops should have a decent selection in various price ranges. Be sure to shop around a bit.

Also, since you'll truly be off-road, ask for "tire liners" and learn how to repair flat tires.
