Street bike help? |
I want to get a street bike, the thing is I have never riden a street bike before. I did moutain biking, road biking and downhill (with lots of suspension) for years, I also owned a sport quad with manual shifting, I also drove a stick shift car for years. I know the shifting and controls are very similar to the quad, but I get nervous thinking about the take off and leaning when turning. I also know I could take the MSF courses, but there is no availability for a couple of months, which I plan on taking anyways. The thing is that I want to start riding as soon as possible because I am getting a hard time affording gas for my truck. Should I just get the bike and practice a bit, I am very coordinated and I puck things up quickly and how hard is the take off and balance a street bike? Because of the cars and quads, you know how to use the clutch and shift gears. Since you can already ride a bicycle, balancing a motorcycle isn't any different. Just a little heavier. You want to try to learn the basics on your own? Sit on the bike with your feet down. Keep 'em down like training wheels until you build up your confidence. Drive around in 1st gear at walking speed, to get used to the clutch. Always be ready to pull in the clutch, one finger on the F brake and be ready to hit the engine stop switch. Well if you are as you say coordinated then you will not have a problem. Be sure you are confortable on the bike you are getting. Make sure it fits you. As they say practice makes perfect. Play in a parking lot over a weekend and you should be good to go. Just get a bike and ride it. It's not rocket science after all, lots of people do it, and I'm sure you are smarter than some of them. Take it slow at the start and you'll gain confidence quickly. Practice on some back roads and you'll do fine. Good luck. Cheers! Getting a street bike to save gas is not a smart thing to do. First of all, most street bikes get really crappy mileage compared to economy cars. If you can get by with a bike everyday you obviously dont need a large vehicle. Go buy a little hybrid Civic used. You will get better mileage than 99% of the street bikes on the road. Hell, My old Ford Escort gets better mileage than most bikes on the road. Ok that is settled...No more crap about justifying your purchase with high gas prices. Just buy the bike and practice a bit. The leaning comes naturally in turns. If you think about it...You have been doing this since your first bicycle. Be sure to buy ALOT of Disability insurance that covers stupid reckless things like riding motorcycles. It costs alot of money to pay someone to wipe your butt for the rest of your life if you get crippled from a minor accident. If you have kids and you insist on placing their future at risk, Buy alot of Life insurance. Raising kids right is very expensive. Don't listen to freedomlover. I used to drive Harley 883 sportster which got 57 MPG Highway miles. I now ride a 2006 Harley 1,450 cc Dyna Streetbob which has been getting 50 MPG on the highway. My Ford escort gets 31 MPG. Don't worry about being able to handle a street bike. I am only 5'8" and don't have a problem with my streetbob. Just make sure to make your own decision on what you buy. Whatever it is enjoy it. no only certain people are smart enough to ride a bike. if you have ridden a dirt bike for years and is now afraid of a street bike than i suggest that you just whack off your pee pee and wear a dress. It's easier then you think. It just kinda comes natural. |
