New bike or? |
I have a trek 7200 hybrid which I bought originally to just get around if need be without wasting money on gas. However, I recently started to ride 28 miles a day which makes me regret not buying a road bike. Would I go much faster and have an easier time with a road bike or should I maybe just get new tires and pedals for the hybrid? I dont have much (read:any) money I can really afford to use on a bike unless it is necessary. dude, sell the car if you don't have money. this will free up the opportunity to purchase either a road bike, or wheels if need be. you note that you currently have a hybrid and want to ride faster and easier. some options that probably won't break the bank (if you choose to stay with the hybrid)- 1. slicks for your hybrid. no knobs on your tires will definitely get you going much faster. drawbacks- rainy days, sand, oil spots etc will become slippery. bike shops will have these for pretty cheap prices. 2. some sort of clip in pedals. some of the more popular are SPD, look, or eggbeaters. you'll need shoes that are compatible too. this will give you a more effective pedal stroke, optimizing efficiency and power. happy cycling! i would sell the bike and buy a roadbike. The hybrid, as you probably have found out, has a very upright riding position, and isnt comfortable on very long rides. The seat tubes are at a low angle, which puts more stress on your hips, obviously the smaller road bike tires will have less of a contact patch, which reduces friction, which helps rolling. the stem sits you up right, and the handle bars sends the weight distribution to the rear wheels, instead of in the center of the frame, which means you need more energy to propel the bike. but if you dont want to buy a new bike, id suggest getting at least a new seat, pedals, wheels/tires, and some drop bars. this will help stop the wear and tear on your body, which should be the most important thing youre looking for. |
