What kind of bike will hold up good, when person is athletically large?

I am 6-1, 250 pounds. Bikes Ive had have cracked under my weight and the amount of trail riding I do. I have been using Mt bikes, but would like a road bike for the speed. So I would like some idea of what kind of road bike to look for, and where. Thanks

Trek bikes tests even their Madone flagship carbon bikes at 300lbs on a 15% grade... Nobody tests to this margin - and offers a lifetime warranty but, Trek.

I would look at the 2200 from Trek just to keep it simple...

I would get the wheels switched out to a high tension wheel like the Bontrager Race - it has Cartridge bearings and is high tension. This bike has a proven background and an amazing ride... Try a 60cm and I think you'll be happy! Source(s): Bike Shop Manager - TN's Largest Trek Dealer
First of all congratulations on taking up cycling.

I don't know where you've been looking for mountain bikes, my suspicion because your bikes have broken is at box stores (Target, Walmart).

You may have gathered here: friends don't let friends but a bike at a box store.

Not going to go into a lot of detail but those bikes are simply too poorly put together and assembled for words. And you'll need more support and service than they offer (and they offer none).

Get thee to a local bike shop. 8-)

Now on to the bike. What to look for.

For durability consider what some would call a "hard tail". These look like mountain bike with no suspension front or back.

Add a set of wheels like Mavic Crossride, 1 1/2 ' slicks and you have a bike that will take you on that first century.

Another option are the "flat bar road bikes".

I'm surprised everyone does not ride them.

Consider quality bikes like the Jamis, Marin and Bianchi flat bar road bikes. I quite like the Specialized Sirrus line too.

Normally I'd advise not getting an aluminum frame, in your case I say yes. Aluminum which could seem stiff to smaller riders will stand up to you.

You are going to need quality wheels.

I also would join, post an inquire at a more knowledgeable and bike specific site.

This resource is great start but you need some more experience and info. I recommend....

I am 6' 2" 270. I have never had a problem with the Cannondale I ride. Even if I DO crack the frame they have a lifetime warranty on the frame. Most higher end companies such as Trek, Gary Fisher, Giant, Specialized, LiteSpeed, Moots, Seven, etc. will replace a frame if you snap it like a twig. The frame I ride on is a all-mountain frame. The rear triangle is ovalized to give more strength to the area it needs most, the rear chainstay. Most bikes I have seen the frames go on..it goes here. As far as what bike to buy.....as was already covered go to a local bike store. Don't shop at Wal-Mart and any big box store. You will get what you pay for. You can get a decent bike for $400 and can get a SWEET bike for $1000 and a dream titanium frame ride for anywhere from $2000 and go up to $7000. You will not regret spending the money. The more you spend the lighter the bike gets and the better it handles. Tubeless wheels and tires and a carbon fiber handle bar will add to the ride.

Then once you become addicted you will buy yourself a fully rigid single speed. Weird, isn't it.

As far as road biking is considered, I spent about $700 on a Cannondale F700. You can get a good road bike for around $400-$500 from a local bike shop. With road biking you don't have to worry about cracking the frame unless you are going to be bunny hopping curbs. Frame flex can be a concern so make sure you get a good one. Again the bike shop can help you out here. They may steer you toward a steel frame due to the fact that it won't flex as much when you are hammering up a hill.
Me, an addicted mountain biker who spent a lot of money on several mountain bikes, a road bike, and a single speed.
6'3" and an athletic 280lb. I only ride cannondale bikes. I have cracked frames on both GT and Specialized bikes.

I currently ride a C-Dale as my hardtail XC and a CAAD 5 on road. I am buying a C-Dale CAAD 8 or CAAD 9 in the next month or so for a new road bike without any reservations.

Be careful of real "high-end" models. Chances are they have light weight wheels which are more prone to failing with heavy weight riders.
