How do you go about fixing up an old bike? |
I have a takara road bike sitting in my basement.. doing some research I found that these bikes were made in the late 70s-80s.. before it was in my basement it was junk picked off the street. I don't know anything about bikes, but it looks like it is in good shape, and it rides. I was just wondering what I could do to fix it up.. assuming that everything is original stock, what should I replace? I know this is hard to answer without knowing what/ IF anything is wrong with it.. but just assuming that all of the parts are original and so old.. what would probably be a good idea to replace? I want to ditch my car, and use this bike for commuting everywhere this summer.. so I want to make sure it will hold up and not leave me stranded. also, If you do not think that restoring this old bike is worth it.. please recommend a good bike for commuting around town.. again, I know nothing about bikes or what to look for. I'm willing to pay as much as $500 for a good one. Check the tires out. Unless they are threadbare (you can see the fabric in the sides) blow em up and see if they hold. If so, forget tires. Check the rear derailleur. If it works but lags from little gear to bigger, adjust the cable while it is in the smalles gear. Pull on the cable while, with the other hand, tighten the nut. Do same with front derailleur. Check brake pads and replace if badly worn. Adjust the cables too. Oil the chain very lightly Oil front and rear wheel bearings unless they are sealed Ride, bro. ride! Don't spend more than a hundred. Go to the Salvation Army store and shop around. |
