Anything wrong with 1980s bike? it still looks new...? |
I bought a ventura road bike from gurage sale, it works with all features, it is too cheap to believe its functions compared to ~$1000 new brand bike. Pls comments... Whoa. Anything that was high end and top of the line in the 80's, will work just fine so long as it's in good condition. You can always upgrade and replace things as needed. Be aware that bike companies hate us and change things up every few years, so compatiblity can be an issue. For example, mountain bikes that vintage used a 1 inch steerer tube and threaded headset. The majority of modern mtb's use 11/8 inch, which will soon be replaced by something "better", even though 1 inch worked pretty well. Handlebars used to be 25.4 mm-which worked just fine. Now all the rage is 30 some mm. I'm not too familiar with ventura, but if they were any good, well maybe you've got some kinda' vintage gem. Harris Cyclery might be a good resource for hard to find parts. Bottom line, if it's as new as you say it is, it will work as well as it did back in 1984. Chances are that if you enjoy cycling, you'll start justifying 1000 dollar bicycles, and before long, 2000 and 3000 dollar bicycles.I have a friend who lives in a van and works six months a year. He rides a 3500 dollar SINGLE SPEED. Beware. Cycling is addictive. Buying cool bikes is even more addictive. I ride a Miyata from the 80's. I have thousands of good miles on it and wouldn't trade it for most new bikes. The key is the shape it is in. If it shifts well and rides smoothly it should be good for a lot of miles. Personally, I have a problem with many "modern" road bikes. They are built for racing and not comfortable enough for long rides. The wheelbase should allow for both crouched and more upright positions. Nothing wrong with a bike from the 80's. As long as it is good shape ride away. I ride a 84 Raleigh Olympain that I turned into a SS. And a 1971 Doniselli with Campy DT shifters and 10 speeds. I like them both almost as much as my 2005 Felt F80. Steel is for real!! |
