What is the proper hand position for road biking?

The joint between my thumb and index finger is hurting very badly. I have been biking up steep hills recently. I think I might be gripping the handlebars in the wrong position.

I tend to have the same problem. I've reduced it to some extent by shifting the levers very slightly forward and down so now I rest more of my palm on the top of the levers rather than the crook of thumb and forefinger. The disadvantage with this is that the brakes are less well positioned for my fingers, but its marginal.

Try too, changing the inward angle of the brakes to match the natural angle of your hands at the bars. Mine are toed in about 5 degrees.

I also invested in better gloves with gel padding right where it gets sore - these work brilliantly - I know this for sure because just yesterday I forgot them, did 50 miles anyway, and I have a blister to show for it at the base of my thumb!
Yep. Sounds like you are leaning too far forward on your hands. Try pulling them back a little so they are not resting so hard on the top of the brake levers and instead, try to rest more of your weight on the palm and heel of your hand. Also, consider investing in some better padded gloves.
biking is just like shooting guns.
dont open to much your elbow. make at 10 degree angle and lock that elbow that you will have a stable handle bar steering. and dont squeeze handle too much just enough to make stable junst in case you get to a boulder or something of that kind.
I had the same problem, and it was because I was putting too much weight on my hands, causing my gloves to ride up and pinch the area between the thumb and finger. My two-part solution: I bought some Specialized Body Geometry gloves that fit my hands better and now make a concious effort to change my hand position often. The ability to change your hand position is one of the advantages of drop-bars over mountain bike flat-bars, so I figure I should use that advantage. I just did a 60 mile ride on Saturday, and my hands were fine.
This is my opinion, Most people when climbing are in a standing position and at that point you should be gripping your brake hoods. When you goe back to the sitting position then you can find the most comfortable hand position on your bars. Again my opinion - I'd never lock my elbows, that's looking for pain.
