How to clean road rash? |
My son fell off his bike and got really bad road rash on his knees, one knee is worse than the other. This happened a couple of days ago and I cleaned it with Band-Aid Hurt-Free Antiseptic wash for cuts and scrapes. It seemed to clean it but now he just got out of the shower and I can see what looks like tar on his knee, or pieces of dirt. I didn't want to use Hydrogen Peroxide because I think it will sting him but I don't know what else to use. Does anyone have any ideas that I can do to clean it out well? Just let him sit in a bath of warm water. Keep neosporin on it to fight infection. other than that he will be ok. don't worry the dirt will work its way out and it will begin to scar up and heal. Peroxide is the least painful of the choices (alcohol or meth.) peroxide won't sting, but to clean out all the gunk, you should numb it with bactine and use a spray bottle full of distilled water and clean the wound with that. After all the stuff is gone, clean it with bactine again, let it dry and put neosporin on it and let it dry out to scab up. Peroxide does not sting. You would be better to wait until he is asleep and use alcohol it will burn but he will be asleep and not know. If there are pieces still in his knees you can pull them out with a sanitized tweezers. Then use anti-biotic ointment to avoid an infection, but if you see puss or yellow discharge you need to go to the DOCTOR with him, because an infection can lead to blood poisoning if left untreated!! My sis is a nurse my son had road rash and the doctor used iodine, the brown stuff. |
