Is it better to ride a bike in England? |
I'm traveling to Dover, Kent (south England) and to Winchester, I'm not to sure about traveling around town in a car (scared) so would a bike be o.k are the road's good to be riding in a bike? When I lived in England I rode my bike to college 20 miles each way. I did not have cycle lanes (like I do here in the US) to protect me and had a few too many close calls! I remember 2 particular situations; 1. A car drove up along side me and proceeded to turn left into another street. She did not even SEE me, why the hell not I don't know. 2. A double Decker bus drove up along side me and got so close (we were doing about 20mph) that I started to kick the side of the bus to get the drivers attention! One big thing to remember over there is; cars rule the roads and everyone not in a car had better look out! If you do ride over there be careful and use as many cycle 'paths' and lanes as possible. Some cities have gotten a lot better about providing cycle lanes now. Enjoy England, it is a great place! it is always safer to travel in a car.....the risk of getting hurt by usiang a bike is much much more than a bike. You will be fine, just make sure you wear a helmet. Dont use a designer brand bike - because when you lock it up to visit the shops, some scum bag will steal it. Get a decent road bike not heavily branded with graphics and suspension technology. I dont think most people care if you ride your bike on the pedestrian pavement - if you go at a slow pace. like i said before, you'll be fine, you might need a air filter mask in busy built up areas during rush hour. these answers are pretty much correct - England has pretty good public transport but the idea that it's cycle-friendly is a misconception. however I bike around everywhere and I manage okay :) |
