Do you need a motorcycle license and insurance to buy a bike from a dealership? |
I currently only have my permit and want to purchase a used Ninja 250 to practice on before my road test. I plan on keeping the bike for a while. NO you don't need anything at all .UNLESS you are getting a loan from a bank for the bike then you will need to get insurance .but if you are paying cash for the bike then it's up to you..I had three bikes i bought cash from dealers..they were used trade-ins..but i had bikes for years before ever getting my license..YOU DON'T NEED A LICENSE TO BUY ANY TYPE OF VEHICLE..the only time you need a license is if you are driving it on the road.even at that ..i drove my bikes for a few years before getting my license .it was a chance i was taking. but i had insurance on my bike incase i would have hit someone and hurt them.. Source(s): My bikes had plates and stickers and insurance but i didn't have a bike license for a few years.. got to have it before you leave the dealer If you're paying cash and not riding it home I wouldn't think so. If you plan to ride or finance it you'd need the insurance to be legal. Dealerships will sell you anything without you having a license or registration. It's not their job to enforce any motor vehicle laws. They sell dirt bikes and quads. A street legal motorcycle is no different. Why would they care if you were going to ride it on the street, or up and down your driveway, or put it in your garage and disassemble the entire motor to practice repairing it? Any water craft (jet skis, jet boats and wave runners) all need to be registered to legally ride in the ocean. Dealerships don't require you to get it registered before you take delivery. No, as long as you have your permit you will be fine, all they will do is make you sign a waiver that states if you reck the bike, there not responsible for it or you. But you will definitely get to ride it home. If you don't want to hassle with the DMV Test, there's a class that you can take for about $200 that teaches you all the rights and wrongs about riding a motorcycle, its called the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, and when you pass they give you a certificate that lets you bypass the DMV Road Test. So if you have your permit now, and you take the class and pass, you automatically get your license. Hope all this helps... No, a permit will do. That is, as long as your over the age of 18. You only need insurance if you plan on taking it and riding it off the lot, or if you finance it. I'm sure that if you are borrowing the money, the loan company will demand that you have insurance on it. |
