What kind of bike would you suggest for a long excursion? |
I've recently set out for a long trip on a Giant Hybrid that was about 10 years old (about 400 kilometers). But I had to turn back after the second day, because the back wheel got disaligned and some of the spokes actually gave out. There was some trail and I guess that's what did in with all the extra weight in the back and the fact the wheel had recently been re-aligned. I'm already quite heavy myself (over 200 pds) and the tires had been changed from large trail wheels to mid-range road tires by a previous owner. I'm thinking of a new, sturdier bike and that's why I'm asking. You had a common set of problems: - old mid price bike - factory wheels that were built to a price point, not to a quality standard - some unknown person who trued them up. Probably, the design of the wheel is sturdy enough. But you'll need to take it to a real bike shop that builds custom wheels on site. IF they don't offer that service, keep looking. It's not very complicated to build a very strong wheel, but not many people are actually able to do it. Once you find that guy, tell him what you're going to do, then pay what he asks. The bike itself is probably fine for that use, as long as it fits you properly. Have the guys at the shop check it over and give you some basic maintenance/repair training. Good luck If off roading you need to get a sturdy bike with bigger tires. On the road a lighter bike with narrow tires is much more efficient. Good Luck |
