What is a good first cruiser bike? |
My dad is big into his harleys (a road glide and a dyna lowrider fatboy) and has been talking to me about getting a bike for a while. I'd like to get a cruiser in the vain of possibly a Softail, Honda Shadow, maybe even a rebel (too small?), or another similar type bike. I'm a big guy, about 6'3 and 240 lbs. I've never really ridden before but I'd really like to get into it. What's a good first bike, and let's assume that cost isn't a terribly huge factor. I'd just like information at this point. Thanks! Why don't you buy your dad's dyna lowrider, after you complete your MSF Basic Rider Course? I would think he would to sell it to his own son for a bargain price, especially since he has the Road Glide to ride around on. Just take is easy for first few months until you get the hang of riding and a good feel for the bike. they/ make /450 /honda rebel / or/ a /450 hondamatic /is a good ride/be safe /have fun Honda Shadow is good. With your hight you will probably be cramped on anything smaller than a Honda 1100 spirit stock. However you dont really need 1100 cc's worth of power in a first bike, if you can disipline your self there is absolutely nothing wrong with getting a larger bike to start off with, especially since you sound liek with your size you will be able to handle the extra weight. I would stay away from the Harley for a first bike for only one reason. I know very few people who have not dropped their first bike at some point or another, and the harley will probably be more expensive to reppair/replace than a jap bike. I would sugest with your hight a used metric cruiser in the 1100-1500 cc range, I am big in to Suzuki but really all the brands are making very good bikes now adays. You can go with a smaller bike in the 750 cc range and the engine will have plenty of power, but you may have to put forward controls on them to give you a little more leg room. one last note, you might want to check on your dads second bike to make sure of what it is. The dyna's are a swingarm framed bike, and they do make a dyna lowrider, however the fatboy is a soft tail and c compleatly differant frame. www.h-d.com personal experiance 750 Shadow is the answer. It's going to get small real fast. Find a good used bike first, take the Motorcycle Safety Course and then, after a little experience, buy what you really want. harley fatboy ! about 16 new, you wont regret! if you buy a small bike you will regret it after the first yr.take the motorcyle class and you will be amazed! but get the bike you always wish you had and you will have no redrets, good luck.. |
