How do i legalize a dirt bike? |
how do i make a dirt bike street legal? i live in CT. please dont tell me to buy a dual sport bike. i hate the way they look and i want some aggressive treads for off road use as well. another question: what does the increase engine size do? whats the difference between a 250 and a 450? more horsepower? faster acceleration? im just buying my first bike (ive been riding for a long time though), so i need any advice you have. Way more trouble than it is worth. requires: Modification of the charging system and connection of a battery. Wiring of lights, head+hi-lo, brake ,tail ,marker and turn lights and all the switches that go with them including a breaker panel or fuse box. Street legal exhaust and appropriate engine de-tuning. Street legal tires ( Knobs are no street legal) A key ignition. In most states ,fender height on MX bikes are too high and need to be lowered. And there is no "Cheating" because the bike will have to pass a physical inspection before it is licensed . I've done a couple, A Honda XR500 and a Yamaha IT425. Even though it's not what you want to hear ,my advice is to get a dual purpose and "trick it out" rather than trying to make a MX bike street legal. Full knobbies are not legal in my state on the public roads, even for street legal bikes. your state may want a battery , lights( brake, tail light, blinkers , headlight and maybe running lights ),quite exaust, emission devices , street approved tires and a way for the engine to charge the battery. It really may be cheaper to modify a dual sport to fit what you want than street legalize a dirtbike. Where I live the vin numbers from a dirtbike will automatically exclude it from being registered on the street. My husband & I took 2 dirt bikes (1973 & a 1978, both classics) to the bike shop to make them street legal. They just added some turn lights, and brake lights that were original to the bike as if it were new. Only cost about $150 total for parts and labor. Write to your congressman and explain that riding a dirt bike doesn't kill brain cells...wait I'm thinking of something else. What was the question??? depending on the bike brand and size, baja designs makes a street legaling kit for them , it comes with everything you need to make your bike a dual sport llghts, battery proper stator (if your bike requires it) signals, brake light switch, headlight, etc. most of the new dual sports have new agressive styling. but if you really want to switch one the honda crf450x is a good place to start. plenty of power, wide ratio tranny stator capable of supporting lights (it already has a headlight and taillight) youu just need to get the dual sport kit for it. bajadesigns.com as far as the 250 450 thing , the 250 has less of everything, if buying a 450 though , make sure your experience and skill level match the bike you select. have a great day! motorcycle technician 25yrs |
