Any suggestions for a first bike? Scooter?

I'm looking for my first bike. 45 yr young stay at home mom, 5'8" 240lbs. I'm considering a scooter vs. motorcycle. Yes I know about the weight issue. Mainly for running errands around our rural town. I like the Honda Silver Wing or something similar. This is my last gasp being young! But not I'm not stupid. I will be taking the safety course. I have been literally dreaming about motorcycles about once a month for years...decided to finally take the plunge. My husband will be getting a Gold Wing trike this summer and would like to take long rides with him and our 8 yr son. Please no nasty comments, they hurt.

P.S. Dumb question...Do you ride on the road or shoulder with a scooter, I see them on the side sometimes...but I'm looking at larger scooters,

Hi kid,
I'm a 57 yr. old working woman who's been riding for 2 yrs. only. I don't know why almost everyone here is recommending such huge bikes. I started with a Stella, a two-stroke, manual shift 150cc and had a hard time with it (though I'd taken the safety course.) I soon reconsidered and got a Honda Metro instead. It's 50cc automatic and will go abt 40mph - very easy to handle, great for around town errands, and no motorcycle license required. Recently I decided it wasn't quite enough bike and moved up to a Kymco People S 200. I can do highways, not freeways. It sounds like a Honda Reflex scooter would be great for you. Automatics are very nice! And why get a bigger bike than you need - more dangerous and harder to handle? Check out urbanscootin.com for friendly helpful people with all sorts of bikes and helpful advice.
Hi,

If you have a scooter under 50 cc, then you would ride the edge if you cannot keep up with traffic. They are designed to go under 30 mph.

I'd get a small motorcycle. 250-500 cc. YOu will be able to keep up with traffic, and it will be more visible.

Or get a large scooter. I think the come as high as 250cc.

They will also keep up with traffic. However you probably need a motorcycle license to operate it, and it would need to be registered.

You will not be able to take long trips with your husband with a scooter, and maybe not with a small motorcycle. You have to keep to back roads, which are more fun anyway.

Be good

Richard
The Suzuki Burgmann scooter comes in 400cc and 650cc models, which is plenty of power, and you won't be hugging the shoulder to stay out of the way of traffic. It would be a lot safer and you can cruise freeway speeds. Why a scooter? If I were spending that much, i'd get a real motorcycle. If you want to be a bear, be a grizzly!
Hi Stichercross - You are definitely not too old. I took up riding 4 yrs ago at 50 and I love it. My husband originally suggested I buy the Suzuki Burgman 650 big scoot (automatic) http://www.suzuki-bikes.com/burgman650.p... but I ride a Honda Shadow 750 and a Ducati Monster 695. Good for you that you are taking the riding course. I'm going to suggest a few websites for you to check out and these should give you a better ideas:
http://www.vtwinmama.com/

and here's another site for an amzing 3 wheel scooter named the Piaggio - it comes in 125cc and 250cc (I'd go for the larger one)

If you have any other questions, just email me.

PS Here's one more 3 wheel cycle by Bombardier http://www.popularmechanics.com/blogs/au...
Not sure on the scooter thing. But if you're wanting to keep up with your hubby's trike, you'll need something with oomph.

I got tired of sitting on the pillion seat of my hubby's Harley, so I just bought a 2002 Yamaha VStar. It's the 650cc version of the Custom. I have been doing rides with him down the highway, and keep up with noooooo problems what so ever. I'm much shorter than you, though, and this specific bike might be a little too close to the ground for your comfort.

You might also look on Craig's List if there's one for your area??

Congrats on the decision to ride - definitely take the safety course - and keep the rubber side down.
My own bike
Your husband is getting a Goldwing Trike-nice!
You are considering a Silverwing-again, nice bike. It sounds as though you are in a Honda Motorcycle family.

First things first. With the personal stats you have provided, I can see no reason the Silverwing would have any trouble doing what you want it to do.

Of course the Reflex would also be good for the same purpose, but if you plan to run errands during the week and maybe tour on the weekend(keeping up with a Goldwing), the Silverwing is a better choice.
It has a 582cc engine vs the Reflex's 250cc engine, so you have lots more power for touring with the Silverwing.

The rest, you seem to have well covered your bases.
The Silverwing, or any scooter over 50cc, is not restricted to the right hand side of the road and is in-titled to all the rights and privileges of a motorcycle.

However, there is a danger that you may not have foreseen, and it is very close to you. That danger is your husband! Once he learns how well the Silverwing rides, he may not want to ever give it back to you if you let him ride it.
To You and Yours
