What would be the best beginner's dirt bike for my 9 year old son. He is tall for his age.?

He will use for casual off-road riding. We're not planning on entering any motocross events. I'd like something he won't outgrown too soon and I'd prefer not to spend a fortune. This will be his 1st bike.

I would go for an 80cc bike with a four stroke engine, I have seen a fully grown woman ride one of these and (although she was short) it was a brilliant first bike.
unfortinaly that hobby is not cheap. But You should look at Honda CRF50F.

"Honda bikes"
I would not definitely not recommend a CRF50F/XR50, thats a little 4-7 year old kiddies bike, i would suggest a CRF70 or an CRF80. The CRF70 is a 3 speed, no clucth trail bike, great for a nine year old who is riding for the first time, but depending on how tall he is he might be good on an CRF80, its slightly bigger and more of a dirtbike( it has a clucth on it). The CRF series are made by honda but kawasaki, yamaha and suzuki also have thier models. You could check each of thier websites to see which manufacturer has the best price. In my own personal experience if you dont want him to out grow the bike that quickly i would get a CRF100, it might be a little more of an intimidating bike for a beginner, but in the long run he will get more experience from it and save you money at the same time. but check out the websites for yamaha, kawasaki, suzuki, and honda.
how big is he ? honda is the best by far but you might need to take hem to a couple shops with you to see whats best for his size and your budget ps make sure he wares a helmet and has some adult supervision good luck
long time rider (me)
hey, dont listen to these people about a 50, 70, 80, 0r 100. Get a klx 125. it is a four stroke perfect size and he wont outgrow it in a year. it has little up keep, and it iis very cool, and if it is too fast it comes with a throtle stop. if he wants blue look at a ttr 125, if he wants yellow look at a drz 125 and if he is looking at the team green go for klx 125. the red is a crf150f.
My choice would be a Yamaha PW 80. These are very inexpensive well built bikes, easy to ride 3 speed with no clutch. They also make lift kits for the front and rear of the bike and many bolt on performance products. I bought one for my son when he was 8yrs old, he is now almost 13 and just grew out of it. Look on ebay and compare prices I think you will see that the PW80 is much less expensive and they have a lot of bolt on performance products for it.
