Recommended Spoke Tension for 700c Road Wheels?

Cannot find this info anywhere! I have 2 wheel building books, 5 bike repair manuals (but not shop manuals like Barnetts), read Sheldon Browns site, & Mavic's site. I trued and dished a 700c road wheel (non-aero) (it was 0.5-in left). The drive-side is consistently tensioned at 394 FT/LB (179Kg) measured by a Park TM-1 Tensiometer, and non-drive spokes vary from 136 ftlb (62kg) to 266 ftlb(121kg). I am concerned I over-tensioned the spokes b/c 'The Art of Wheel Building' (Schraner) recommends drive-side tension 225-250ftlb, and non-drive 135-160 ftlb = appx 60-65% of driveside. Probst & Brown list no clear recommendations on tension. Does ANYONE know of a set of tables or other references of suggested spoke tensions by -type of wheel, -size of wheel, -brand, -rider weight, -tire size, -type of spoke (st, 2b, 3b) etc etc. ?? Do I have to buy a UBI or Barnetts manual for this Black Magic?

It really isn't Black Magic.

The real trick is to have EVENLY tensioned wheels rather than rely on measured tension.

As a general rule, the heavier the rider the greater the tension. The fewer the spokes the greater the tension. It sounds like Schraner was discussing wheels with low spoke count.

Nevertheless you haven't destroyed anything. Just take the spokes back to slack, then tighten them until every spoke on the non drive side shows 1 thread below the nipple and every spoke on the drive side shows 2 threads. Carefully check for out-of-round, dish, and true (in that order). Once you have it, tighten each spoke evenly one turn at a time until you have a good medium tension on the spokes. For larger riders apply a slightly higher tension.

As you have pointed out the variables in wheelbuilding are almost endless and it would be next to impossible to account for every eventuality.

Experience and practice will be your best friends. Source(s): 27 years in the experiance, have built thousands of wheels.
